Yes, it was a real Playboy Club.
It was an expensive rethink of the failing Playboy Club concept. It involved:
1. The rebranding of the New York Playboy Club name as the 'Empire' Club - playing on one of New York's most famous landmarks. The New York Playboy Club also appeared in smaller lettering in logos.
2. Complete overhaul of the interior design moving away from the homogenous Playboy Club interiors.
3. Creation of new Bunny uniforms. The new costume designs were thematic: US service (army, navy, air force), an Empire State Bunny, Indian (Native American) Bunny, Madonna Bunny, Bride Bunny, Miss USA Bunny, Valentine's Bunny.
4. The introduction of male hosts/servers called 'Rabbits'. They wore the collars and cuffs but not the tails or ears. They were like Chippendales (buffed, handsome) but with slightly more torso clothing and sometimes a hat.
While it was a commendable effort to rework the Playboy Club concept, the Empire Club was not a success and closed within two years. Playboy Clubs all over America and in the UK were closing in this period. It was a concept whose time had come and gone.
But now, twenty years on from what seemed like the last shake of the Bunny's tail, it looks like the Bunny has made a comeback. Playboy at the Palms in Vegas is a huge success and a forthcoming casino in Macau (China) will open this year. The Bunny's return to London (UK) is still being planned.
We'll never see a huge chain of Playboy Clubs again, but if the Bunny is to return, it will be in franchised casinos in selected locations around the world. _________________ Alan, Webmaster
